In a report from November 2025, SEGA revealed a little bit more about the sales performance of its big kart racer, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.
At the time, the game had reached a worthy milestone of 1 million units sold, but it seems the publisher had higher hopes.
"We recently announced that worldwide cumulative sales have surpassed 1 million units," the report states. However, it adds that "initial performance did not meet our expectations," obviously suggesting its internal targets were not met.
The publisher is "aiming to sell approximately another 1 million units within this fiscal year," by which it means the end of March 2026.
It hopes to achieve that by "encouraging players to enjoy the game over time through the continued support of the title including ongoing release of additional downloadable content".
Indeed, since its launch in September of last year, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds has been updated with several free characters to race as, and multiple premium DLC packs have also been released, adding more characters, cars, and tracks from other brands.
There are still a couple of DLC packs to come, introducing Nickelodeon's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Avatar properties to the colourful kart racer.
Whether SEGA has plans for much more after that remains to be seen. It's also unknown at this stage how close the game is to its target of 2 million total sales by March.
As reported by Eurogamer, its main competition, Mario Kart World, has sold 9.5 million copies as of last September.

I haven't played it because I'm happy enough with Mario Kart world for my Kart racing fix but from what I've read and listened to on various video game podcasts this game is as good as if not better than Mario kart world (in it's present condition, no doubt MKW will get updates and DLC over time)
None of my friends know this game exists. I'm the only one who bought it. It's a great game but nobody is seeing the marketing.
Probably a bad move to release the game the same year as Mario Kart World, I'd say it's biggest audience would have been on Nintendo and they were already getting MKW and Kirby Air Riders.
I am surprised tbh. Anything I read/heard said it's a great alternative for MKW and go-to for non-Switch gamers.
Maybe the karting game segment just isn't that big. I can't think of many outside of Mario Kart that have taken the world by storm.
I've played Mario Kart (I have an driving arcade machine with all entries except MCW), and I think Sonic Crossworlds is far superior. Don't sleep on this one guys, it's fantastic.
Found it to be meh. All-stars Racing Transformed still eats it for breakfast.
How selling at a faster rate than your previous racer is not meeting expectations, unless they're beyond unrealistic, I'll never know lol. Still easily my favorite kart racer. It controls amazing, the musics great, most of the tracks are super fun. Even tho the final stretch of final laps can get annoyingly chaotic. It's still a lot of fun especially when you manage to overcome all the gloves, slimes, shurikens, silver surfers coming to take your top spot 😂
I didn't buy it because I'm waiting for all the dlc characters to be bundled with the game! Sonic All stars & Transformed I bought on day one because I knew I was buying complete games 🤷
The biggest problem is that this game mostly caters to Nintendo fans and they are than likely gonna play Mario Kart World or even Kirby Air Riders before this. Too many kart racers.
That's a shame. I played both this and MK World and I'd say Crossworlds is much better actually. I still think MK8 is the best the genre has to offer but Crossworlds is really good.
@Member_the_game this isn't better than Mario Kart World, Sonic Racing is a good kart racer but its not as good as Transformed was, let alone Mario Kart
Sonic and his friends are just kinda lame characters. Mario Kart is like an institution now. No way Sonic can compete.
@carlos82
As I said I haven't played it, I'm only going off what other people tell me.
I've played previous Sonic racing games and wasn't overly impressed by them
I’m bored of Mario Kart. It really needs an overhaul, maybe a bit more gritty or just something different. So as I’m bored of Mario kart , sonic racing doesn’t stand a chance despite it being a good game. There are just so many good games coming out too and my backlog is already impossible to keep up to date.
Did MKW sell 10 million copies are does that include those bundled w/ the consol? I know it was an extra $50 but still.
If Sega expected Sonic to do Mario numbers they're delerious.
Selling a $60 game w/ a $30 season pass should hurt game sales just on principle. They'll sell the complete game for the price of the dlc in a year.
I'm still playing Disney Speedstorm for free. It looks and controls much better than Sonic on PS5. I can't recommend it now though, too pay to play, basically a trial or demo, but since I started free from the beginning it's all I need. I own MKW and don't even play it, which makes me sad after waiting a decade after 8 on Wii U. (We never double dipped on Switch)
I was put off by the price, especially when it sells itself as a big crossover game so the DLC is a big part of it.
Wait is Mario Kart World now on Playstation? When did that happen? As that is all that a lot of people seem to be talking about.
game is littered with flaws and grotesquely overpriced
@DonkeyFantasy i’m kind of inclined to agree, and i blame sega for it. Sonic lost his edge from the early 2000s era because Sega started copying Nintendo and trying to align Sonics identity and world to be like Mario’s all the way down to the redesigns of Sonic & characters and different lore.
it sucks
@CRASH64 also this, i prefer sonic riders so much over sonic kart
@MrPeanutbutterz yeah the demo really didn’t do it for me, though maybe the other courses in it are better? But I loved transformed! So from what I played, I agree with you
There is that slight problem dealing with the fact that it's just not a very good game. Then again that's 9 out of every 10 sega games.
@White_oyster That was my experience with the demo as well! Took a gamble on the final game as I got the disc cheap and could resell it... and resell it I did.
I picked it up on PS5 recently because I'm not upgrading to Switch 2 any time soon, and I am enjoying it, but it's not pulling me back over other games. Even my 9yo would rather play MK8 for the 3,000th time than play this brand new similar title.
Goes to show switch is where the kart racing gang really are with MK8 and MKW.
The other devices are not purchased for kart racing games obviously.
@Juanalf Didn't Transformed literally have Day One DLC in a pre-order bonus of Metal Sonic & a Track?
Loved it personally. But the game was barely marketed and it seems backwards to not advertise a product and complain sales didn't meet expectations.
I also think people just see Sonic and immediately refuse the idea of paying full price for anything regardless of quality. Meanwhile people don't think twice about paying $80 for Mario Kart, and will foam at the mouth to buy DLC when that comes out regardless of quality, quantity, or price.
Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed was a brilliant game still play it to this day on PC, during lockdown me and my girlfriend played Team Racing as it was with PS+ on PS4 at the time. It was okay but the stuttering was just awful and was getting annoying which messed with the experience, especially for me coming from Transformed.
I don't think I'll get this one price is high and after playing Mario Kart 8 for years I was burned out. So much so I've gone back in time on my PS2 for Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec lol
Sega really need to stop with the high expectations because it's Sonic and his films have done really well. Gaming side it's always been up and down ever since the end of the Dreamcast, Frontiers had it's support but Mainia is where it's at for me it's really good.
Just wish Sega would remaster Skies of Arcadia for god sake
Mario Kart World is garbage. CrossWorlds is the far superior game of the two. I'm seeing a lot of comments from people that have either never played it, or only played the demo.
If Sega think this numbers didn't meet their high expectation then i'm worry for Shinobi: Art of Vengeance. So far Sega not yet tell the numbers and there's no sign from them if the game is a success either. sigh...
After being extremely disappointed with Mario Kart World, I bought Crossworlds, and now I deeply regret it. I was able to play online for one week, but then my adorable government tried to block vpn yet again. Vpn still works of course, but the online in Sonic Crossworlds, GBF Versus Rising and who knows where else doesn't.
Seems like a slow game with very wide courses, and I don't like the DLC characters from Nickelodeon, etc. Its like my friend who would always bring his WWE figures to play with my TMNT figures. No sir. Nuh uh. Beat it.
Segas games are stupidly priced. They don't look or feel like 70usd games. Bring prices down to 50 for Sonic and 60 for Yakuza and Persona and people may bite. Even MKW has largely been bought at 50USD since it was 80-90% of SKUs for NSW2 from the last information we got.
@shoeses "Didn't Transformed literally have Day One DLC in a pre-order bonus of Metal Sonic & a Track?"
I got the day one edition disc at regular price and it came with the download code for Metal Sonic, so many people didn't even have to pay for it.
Compare that to the $30 season pass of crossworlds, it's safe to assume there will be more seasons.
Is there no love for Disney Speedstorm?
Been playing it constantly & the handling of the karts is sublime, easily the best feel for drifting on any of the big hitters, to the extent that I just can't get on with Crossworlds rather stiff handling. Speedstorm's handling is more akin to Sonic Transformed which is one of the best karting games, in my opinion
One of the only issues if heard about the game is the fact that it doesn't have voice acting for the guest characters. Instead just using sound effects from the series they come from (i.e. Joker using menu sounds from P5).
Apart from that, I have heard that overall it's a great racing game. Sucks to hear that it didn't meet its expectations.
I think it's funny that someone decided to report on a financial report released in November in February and every other outlet copied them.
Anyway, yeah selling another 1 million copies in 5 months seems like an easy task, considering this report predates any black Friday sales and the Switch 2 port's release.
Maybe there were more people like me, a fan of Transformed, but didn't like this when they played the demo.
